Troutman company wins ‘Coolest Thing Made in NC’ contest

A Troutman company manufactures the “Coolest Thing Made in NC,” the NC Chamber announced this month. C.R. Onsrud’s Q-Series 5-Axis CNC Machine won the top prize in the medium-to-large business category of the “Coolest Thing Made in NC” competition.

Now an annual tradition, the NC Chamber launched the competition in 2020 to honor North Carolina’s manufacturers and raise awareness about the rewarding careers in modern manufacturing. The state’s innovative manufacturing industry is the largest workforce in the Southeast with more than 450,000 North Carolinians employed by 10,250 manufacturers.

The Q-Series, or “QUBE,” was developed for companies seeking 5-axis high-speed trimming and machining of advanced materials used in the aerospace, automotive, defense, marine, and pattern shop industries, according to the company’s website.

The contest recognizes two winners: one for businesses with at least 100 employees, one for businesses with fewer than 100 employees. Fjord Inc’s static rope edge protectors, manufactured in Burlington, won in the small business category.

“Congratulations to C.R. Onsrud and Fjord Inc. for winning the 2023 ‘Coolest Thing Made in NC’ title,” NC Chamber President and CEO Gary Salamido said. “We would like to thank our entire manufacturing community for developing important and lifesaving products for our state, country, and world. Our manufacturers are vital to both the health of our people and our economy.”
