Steel manufacturer expands, adding jobs in Cleveland County

Manufacturer Maco Incorporated has announced plans to add jobs and expand its facility in Cleveland County after being awarded a building reuse grant by the state of North Carolina.

Governor Roy Cooper recently announced 15 grant recipients through the North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority.

Maco plans to use the $160,000 grant to support the expansion of 7,800 square feet of building space in Shelby and new equipment to help automate production. The company currently has 58 employees and plans to add 20 new jobs over the next two years.

“On behalf of the board of commissioners, we are excited that Maco has once again decided to invest in Cleveland County with added jobs and expansion,” Kevin Gordon, chair of the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners, said. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with them and supporting all their endeavors as their business thrives.”

“Cleveland County is proud to be home to Maco Inc. and congratulates them on their expansion in Shelby,” Johnny Hutchins, economic development liaison for the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners, said. “Not only does this company provide cutting edge services to their customers, but also high-quality jobs for our citizens. We thank them for choosing to continue to invest in our community.”

The southeast’s leading metal fabricator solution, Maco is a family-owned company, started in the basement of the family home by Mike Melton in the late 1970’s. Today, the steel fabricating company offers expertise in welding, machining, and industrial and structural steel manufacturing. For more than 40 years, Maco has continued to grow and build upon the founding principles.

“Maco is excited to announce the most recent expansion of our fabrication facility which will add employment opportunities for Cleveland County,” President & CEO Todd Melton said. “Maco treats employees like family, and we are excited to grow our family!”
