Last month, Charlotte City Council and the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) voted to rescind support for the Interstate 77 managed lanes project south of Uptown. Since then, local and state leaders and stakeholders have continued to evaluate options for what’s next.
A legislative proposal has been floated to incentivize municipalities to reconsider their opposition to the I-77 South proposal. The proposal would require them to pay back funds spent by the North Carolina Department of Transportation on the project to date.
The General Assembly is also considering additional proposals, with a potential for inclusion in the state budget.
The NCDOT Board could act as soon as August to remove the project from the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP), effectively ending the project and sending the $600 million to other parts of the State. Part of the legislative proposals would instruct the NCDOT Board to wait on its decision on the project, thereby extending time for local parties to evaluate options.
The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance supports the I-77 South project as part of a region-wide approach to addressing congestion and improving mobility.
