$43M grant will reduce delays at CLT airport

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis announced he secured a grant worth more than $43 million for Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The grant will provide funding for the airport to construct a deicing pad and taxi lanes to reduce airplane delays.

The grant comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that Tillis helped negotiate and pass into law.

“Charlotte Douglas continues to be one of the busiest airports in the world, and as air traffic increases we must work to ensure airplanes have minimal delays,” Tillis said. “This grant to construct a deicing facility and upgrade taxi lanes will bring much-needed improvements, and I am proud to have worked on the bipartisan infrastructure law to make this grant possible.”

Some of the improvements the grant will fund include:

  • Widening aircraft taxi lanes around Concourses D and E to reduce traffic delays
  • 108,656-square-yard aircraft deicing pad
  • Paving, grading, and drainage construction
  • Taxiway construction and extensions.

CLT is No. 5 worldwide for air traffic, No. 6 for passenger traffic, and is the second-largest hub for American Airlines.
