Monthly, if not more, I find myself engaged in a conversation that goes something like this:
“So, where are you from?”
“Here!”
“Wait, like…HERE, here?”
“Born and raised in Lincoln County, yep.”
“Man. You’re a unicorn. I don’t know anyone from here.”
Of the two definitions I found, I struggle to think it’s the “mythical animal” thing, but the “highly desirable yet difficult to find or obtain” thing makes sense. And, I get it! It’s no secret that the Charlotte Region is truly a rich tapestry of all types of people, cultures and businesses. It is well beyond the old “banking city” or “commuter town” adages I heard growing up. Great corporations and small businesses, kind people, neighborhoods with unique personalities, the best kind of barbecue…honestly, who wouldn’t want to be from here?
And, after being on the receiving end of more than 30 years of growth across this region, I’m thrilled to be a part of the Charlotte Alliance Young Professionals Board. To be given the chance to make an impact on the place that’s made me who I am isn’t one that comes around very often.
A “unicorn” type of opportunity, if you will.
