The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance’s signature talent attraction program, Intern CLT, concluded last week, marking an incredible, event-packed summer for more than 170 interns and future young professionals.
In partnership with the CLT Alliance Young Professionals, the program collaborated with 40 different Charlotte Region-based companies. Each company’s involvement not only supported the interns, but also showcased their commitment to nurturing young talent and investing in the future of our region. The program gives employers the opportunity to send their interns to in-person events as ambassadors for their company, while networking with other young professionals. Intern CLT is designed to attract and retain young talent in the Charlotte Region.
Over the past weeks, more than 170 talented interns were introduced to the vibrant culture, dynamic business environment, and endless opportunities that Charlotte offers. The popular program grew over the course of the summer as word spread about the professional development opportunity. By the end of the summer, the cohort of interns was nearly 50% larger than last year’s group.
The program kicked off on June 13 with Tim Miner from Charlotte Is Creative. Hosted by EY, the event gave interns a warm welcome to our city and their first networking opportunity.
Later that month, interns explored some of South End’s iconic spots. The walking tour began in the courtyard of The Vantage. David Head, managing director at Grant Thornton, welcomed the interns on behalf of the CLT Alliance Board and the many tenants of Vantage that are CLT Alliance members. Head offered career advice for the rising young professionals, encouraging them to deliver in role, build their network, and be positive.
Christopher Moxley, co-owner of 704 Shop, hosted the interns at his Charlotte-themed lifestyle brand and streetwear store. The interns then made stops at the Confetti Hearts Wall, enjoying King of Pops popsicles provided by Charlotte Center City Partners, and wrapped the evening at the Trolley Barn.
The next event centered on innovation. A thought-provoking lunch and learn session hosted by Winston & Strawn LLP and Gillian Horn. Danielle Williams, Tracea Rice, and Rick Quarles led a panel discussion on how innovation and patents can enhance careers and drive business success, while also highlighting the Queen City’s role as a leading innovation hub.
On July 16, interns participated in a breathtaking skyline soirée on the rooftop of Lowe’s Tech Hub. The event included activations like a mega Mario Kart Tournament and prizes such as tickets to Charlotte FC, NASCAR VIP Cup Series, Nintendo Switches, and more. The interns had a valuable opportunity to hear from leaders Andrea Smith, interim President and CEO of the CLT Alliance, and Seemantini Godbole, chief digital and information officer of Lowe’s.
The final intern event of the summer was an executive chat with leaders in the sports economy. Hosted by Ally and moderated by sports broadcaster Josh Sims, Seth J. Bennett of the Charlotte Hornets and Jake Burns of Tepper Sports & Entertainment gave interns a glimpse into the sports industry’s local leadership. Interns also had a surprise meet-and-greet with Charlotte Hornet Mark Williams.
The summer was made possible thanks to sponsors, Coca-Cola Consolidated and Duke Energy Corporation, and the many partners across the region’s business community who believe in the future talent of Charlotte.
“I want to add a special note of appreciation to the enthusiastic and engaged participants,” Grace Futterman, Intern CLT program lead, said. “Their energy, curiosity, and eagerness to learn have been truly inspiring. The commitment these young professionals have shown to their personal and professional growth is commendable. The CLT Alliance wishes everyone continued success in their future endeavors and looks forward to seeing the positive impact this cohort will undoubtedly have on the Charlotte Region and beyond!”
