UNC Charlotte earns high international marks for research, academic excellence

In the recently released 2023 Times Higher Education World University rankings, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte climbed 33 spots among U.S. universities. The results are regarded as one of the leading national and international university rankings focused on research and academic excellence.

“Charlotte’s strategic plan outlines a new vision for the University as a nationally recognized top-tier research university, helping us better support growth and the economic vitality for our fast-growing region,” Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber said. “The Times Higher Education ranking shows that the University is making strong progress toward our goal thanks to the innovative work of our world-class and diverse faculty, staff and students.”

Times Higher Education ranks UNC Charlotte third among North Carolina public universities and 114 among all U.S. institutions.

Charlotte’s citation score, which captures the number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally, is now second among participating UNC System institutions and among the top 30% of institutions globally.

The annual THE rankings examine five key performance pillars at 1,800 universities worldwide: Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income and International Outlook. Together, these pillars include 13 performance indicators that, when combined, create an overall score that reflects the strength of the institution. Charlotte’s global ranking places the University in an upward trajectory with other universities achieving top-tier research status.

This is one of several recent rankings that show the University’s rise as an emerging top-tier research university.
