Paper supplier to add new jobs in Cleveland County expansion

Clearwater Paper Corporation, a leading supplier of private label tissue, announced plans this week to expand in Cleveland County, investing more than $22 million and creating 13 new jobs. The company’s new facial tissue line will be located at its present Shelby consumer products complex and represents the third major expansion for the corporation.

“Clearwater Paper chose Shelby for its newest facial tissue line due to its proximity to our customers, a growing local skilled workforce and a history of excellent working relationships with the City of Shelby, Cleveland County and the State of North Carolina,” Clearwater Paper Senior Vice President of Consumer Products Michael Urlick said. “Our customers require quality products delivered on time. This location coupled with our outstanding Shelby team can make it happen.”

Clearwater Paper’s Shelby location manufactures high-quality store-brand bathroom tissue, paper towels, napkins and facial tissue. The 400-acre facility employs more than 600 with an annual average payroll of more than $41 million. The new positions will have an average annual salary of $60,769.

“We look forward to renewing our ongoing partnership with the City of Shelby, Cleveland County and the State of North Carolina as we continue to invest in the community, our people and the manufacturing facilities,” Shelby Mill Manager Chris Kelm said. “The City of Shelby’s Economic Development team, along with the Economic Development Partnership of NC, have offered valuable guidance and helped us make this important decision to locate and build our newest project in Cleveland County.”

“We consider expansion projects to be the highest honor in economic development as they highlight our community’s pro-business environment and synergistic relationship with our industry partners,” Shelby City Manager Rick Howell said. “We look forward to our continued partnership and watching Clearwater Paper thrive in Shelby.”
