Charlotte remains one of the fastest growing cities in the country, according to the latest U.S. Census data released today.

With a population of just over 911,000, Charlotte holds firmly to its spot as the No. 15 most populous city in the nation.

Its population increased 1.7% from July 2022-23, making it one of the fastest growing large cities. Charlotte had the third-largest gain by numeric change, adding more than 15,600 people in the one-year span. Only Fort Worth and San Antonio, Texas saw larger population increases.

Overall, the South continued its dominance, leading the way with the largest and fastest growth patterns.

“The population growth across the South in 2023 was driven by significant numeric and percentage gains among its cities,” Crystal Delbé, a statistician in the Census Bureau’s Population Division, said. “Thirteen of the 15 fastest-growing cities were in the South.”

In North Carolina, Charlotte added the most people, but Raleigh edged out Charlotte in the percentage of population change, increasing by 1.87% compared to Charlotte’s 1.7%. With 473,000 residents, Raleigh’s population is roughly half of Charlotte’s.

“Charlotte continues its dynamic growth, building on the momentum we’ve seen year after year,” Rob Horton, CLT Alliance chief marketing and communications officer, said. “These population trends underscore the importance of smart investments and policies to ensure our region can continue to grow and thrive. How we innovate will define our future.”
