Public Policy Update

There’s never a dull day in the public policy world. Just ask the Alliance’s Joe Bost. He spends two days a week in Raleigh at the North Carolina General Assembly advocating on behalf of the business community. Joe’s efforts don’t stop at the state line. He recently joined Kim Burch, executive director with Chesterfield Economic Development, for a daylong visit to the South Carolina General Assembly in Columbia.

Affordable housing and the real estate market continue to be among top issues of concern for business leaders. March’s Land Use Committee meeting featured Dr. Richard Buttimer, director of the Childress Klein Center for Real Estate at UNC Charlotte, who discussed the findings of a comprehensive housing study of the Charlotte region. One of the key takeaways from the report -  the Charlotte region has a population that is growing faster than its housing stock. As a result, prices are rising for all housing faster than inflation. This increase in prices is affecting both owner-occupied and rental properties. Learn more about the report here.

Congresswoman Alma Adams joined members for last month’s legislative luncheon held at the Alliance. Adams provided the group with a deep dive on the first 60 days of the new Congress.
