Access to Opportunity: Upskilling During COVID-19 and Beyond
Due to the COVID-19 crisis North and South Carolina have seen record job losses and unemployment insurance claims in the Carolinas are among the highest in the nation. More than 1.2 million claims have been filed through the first week of May, 2020, representing 17 percent of both states’ workforces.
Workers in the retail, restaurant and hospitality industries have been the hardest hit by the pandemic’s economic impact.
Despite these dismal statistics which represent our people and businesses, there is an opportunity to support individuals in obtaining the knowledge, education and new skills they need in careers and industries expected to grow, in the midst of COVID-19 and beyond.
Access to Opportunity will provide funding for workers who have been displaced by the economic impact of COVID-19 for the purpose of continuing education, training and upskilling through courses and certificate programs provided by regional community colleges and select four-year colleges and universities. Many such courses can be provided online during this time of social distancing and shelter-at-home, making valuable use of available time.
Individuals will also be connected to free career and training resources and services provided by organizations such as Charlotte Works, Centralina, Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, and other workforce development organizations in the region.
Help us fund the upskilling of 125 workers or more through college courses and certificate programs, and more than 300 by connecting them to resources provided by our workforce development and training partners, to pursue careers in technology, manufacturing and other sectors.
With enough support, we will able to extend this initiative into 2021 and help hundreds more individuals get the skills and training they need to benefit from the increased opportunities that will be generated as our regional economy recovers and continues to grow.
