Fortune 500 and 1000 Companies in the Charlotte Region

A major indicator of a city’s economic strength and stability is the presence of Fortune 1000 operations, and the Charlotte Region boasts several. Six Fortune 500 headquarters and a total of 14 Fortune 1000 headquarters call the region home.  More importantly, more than 200 of the Fortune 500 companies have made a commitment to Charlotte by placing one or more of their facilities within the Charlotte region.

The biggest winners on this year's list were Nucor, which advanced 31 spaces in the rankings after its second straight year of near 25% revenue growth. Door- and window-maker JELD-WEN also advanced 35 spaces in the ranking to No. 590 after growing revenue by 16%. JELD-WEN, a major supplier to Lowe's, moved its headquarters to Charlotte in 2012 in part to be near Lowe's headquarters in Mooresville. This move is just one example of the spillover effects of corporate headquarters recruitment and the success suppliers and service providers find in the Charlotte Region.

This year's list also does not yet include the move of Honeywell (No. 77) to Charlotte and the future merger of BB&T(No. 246) and SunTrust (No. 304). Falling off of the Fortune 1000 list this year were Snyder's-Lance and Resolute Forest Products. Snyder's Lance was acquired by Campbell Soup (No. 349) last year, so its profits are recorded in Campbell's headquarters city, Camden, N.J.

The Fortune 500 list ranks the previous year’s annual revenues of large national and multinational corporations headquartered in the United States. Revenue does not have a direct relationship with profits or market value, but the list is a quantitative symbol of the scope, power and size of a particular company.  Because Fortune does not include companies that do not file financial statements with government agencies or companies incorporated outside of the U.S., large corporations like Compass Group, Hendrick Automotive Group, Ingersoll Rand and National Gypsum Company are excluded from the list.
