Charlotte Overview: Living Here
People love to live in Charlotte. That's one of the reasons relocating companies are successful in recruiting highly talented individuals from all regions of the U.S. and abroad. Charlotte has one of the highest in-migration rates in the nation. Once they are here, most newcomers do not want to leave, and here are just a few of the reasons why:
Charlotte-Mecklenburg is consistently ranked among the top 10 moving destinations and one of the fastest growing cities and regions in the United States. With a population of nearly 2.4 million, metropolitan Charlotte offers all of the advantages and amenities of a major urban area.
Located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Charlotte is two hours east of the Appalachian Mountains and three hours west of the Atlantic Ocean, putting residents in easy traveling distance from some of the best-rated mountain attractions and beaches in the nation. Charlotte’s strategic location makes the area only a two-hour plane ride from more than 53 percent of the U.S. population. Charlotte Douglas International Airport provides superior air service with more than 700 daily nonstop flights to 165 destinations.
Charlotte's cost of living is 94.8 percent of the national average, one of the lowest for cities of its size. A key component of that figure is housing, which in Charlotte is 86 percent of the national average. The Charlotte housing market is strong, with a median single-family home price of $240,000 as of November 2017, a 9.1 percent increase from the year before.
For relocating spouses and partners, job opportunities in Charlotte are greater than in most other U.S. cities. Charlotte boasts more than 250 Fortune 500 operations, more than 1,300 companies that regionally employ 100 or more, and six Fortune 500 headquarters. During the first nine months of 2017, 785 different companies in Mecklenburg County alone announced the creation of 10,820 new jobs.
