Healthy Charlotte Award Winner 2016

2016 Healthy Charlotte Award winner

The Carolinas Healthcare System’s Healthy Charlotte Award is designed to provide excellent examples of Chamber member companies putting health first for their employees and the community at large.

Through its Wellness Committee, MEDIC engages all areas of the Agency, from senior management to logistics. Senior management leads by example from showing up for daily workouts in the gym to ensuring healthy meals are served at company events. Funds are budgeted for premium discounts, programs, and special projects, and employees who participate in the annual HRA/biometric testing receive a deep discount on premiums. 2015 participation rate was 93%.

Last year, MEDIC had its biggest challenge as it set their focus on a tobacco-free workforce. The Wellness Committee used feedback from current smokers to develop their “Do it…” campaign. This unique campaign utilized former smokers as mentors to assist current smokers to quit. In addition, they partnered with the Mecklenburg County Health Department to educate their smoking population on how to get help and what resources they could use to assist them in quitting. This effort follows a string of successes.

In 2012, based on employee surveys and feedback, MEDIC designed and built a new 24 hour indoor fitness facility for employees only. The following year they expanded the breakroom and installed a micro market, removing all traditional vending and adding fresh healthy food that is delivered multiple times per week.

The most unique program they offer is the Fit Responder. Employees are trained on proper ergonomics. They are taught how to use the vehicle and items in it to stretch and be active before and between calls so they are ready for the next patient. Physical activity, nutrition, tobacco cessation...sounds familiar.
